Vacationing as a family can have its challenges period but taking a vacation as a BLENDED family can have its own unique set of circumstances.
A few things to help make it a bit easier:
Like most situations in a blended family, go in with an open mind and NO expectations. Don’t try to control daily situations, take it as it comes, and try to be flexible with the many personalities you have in your family. Try to pivot if need be and be realistic of outcomes. Your vacation may not look like a perfectly curated Instagram post but it can still be great in its own way.
Don’t make more out of something than what it is. For example, if your child is not as interactive or excited as you might expect about this amazing vacation you have spent months planning, don’t read too much into it. They may not be able to express how they feel but you are still making core memories with them.
Focus on the good and try not to sweat the small things. Ask yourself if it will matter in a day, week, or month. If not, let it go, and focus on something else. Reframe and try to find the positive.
Remember that whatever you may be dealing with at home will likely follow you on vacation. You are going to be faced with similar situations just in a different location. Use the tools you have to maintain healthy interactions with one another and not exacerbate existing issues. (Need help, DM me for tools you can use to do this!)
Make time for yourself to recharge even if it is just for a few minutes. Read a book or take a minute by yourself at the pool. This can help you reframe if needed and come back with a fresh perspective.
Remember to have fun and keep things light. If the kids see you having fun and creating some positive energy, it will rub off on them.
There is something called emotional contagion, we can spread our emotions and behaviors to those around us. You have the opportunity to be the example for your blended family and create the environment you want.
